Hike the Vineyards and Visit a Butterfly Sanctuary at Jordan Vineyard and Winery in Healdsburg, California

Hike the picturesque hills and valleys at Jordan Vineyard and Winery, passing through the vines and descending into the olive orchards during a guided excursion you’ll need to book in advance. You’ll get a chance to see the winery’s new pollinator sanctuary that supports native bees, honey bees, hummingbirds, and plays a crucial role in helping Monarch caterpillars turn into butterflies. For the sanctuary, Brent Young, the director of agricultural operations at Jordan, worked with Pollinator Partnership to find locations on the winery’s 1,200-acre estate for the difficult-to-grown milkweed plants that Monarch caterpillars feed on exclusively. (Without the plant, they can’t complete their metamorphosis into butterflies). A reward for this moderately strenuous four-mile hike is the panoramic view of the area’s mountain ranges and wine regions once you reach the top of Vista Point. A charcuterie picnic and wine pairing awaits you upon your return.
